PANDORA

“If you hurt my truck, I’ll kill ya. If you look in the rearview mirror, I’ll kill ya. If you . . .”

The prospect that Marler had introduced as Fish rolled his eyes. “I get it, Kitty. Don’t hurt the truck or look at your girl.” When Marler nodded, Fish sighed again and I heard him grumble, “At this point, it might be safer to just drive with my eyes closed.”

“If you get a single scratch on my truck . . .”

“You’ll kill me! I know, I know!” the man said before he got into the cab of the truck.

As Marler walked back along the truck toward me, I saw the man in the cab reach up and tilt the rearview mirror as far up as it would go. I’d had enough wine to loosen me up and couldn’t help but laugh.

“What did he do?”

“He flipped the mirror up so he’s not tempted.”

“Then I’ll probably let him live,” Marler said with a firm nod. “We’ll see.”

I laid down on my side and motioned for him to come closer before I asked, “Do you happen to know anyone with a plane?”

“Maylee’s pretty good friends with a prince or some shit. I bet with the right motivation, she’d hook us up,” Marler said as he crawled onto the mattress beside me. He reached up and knocked on the window before he yelled, “Shut the tailgate!”

I saw Fish walk past the bed of the truck and put the tailgate back into place, never once letting his gaze wander anywhere near us before he got back into the truck and started the engine.

“And off we go,” Marler said as he pulled me closer. Our bodies were touching from chest to feet when he asked, “Where is this list that you speak of, anyway? Is it all in your head or hidden somewhere on your person?”

“I’ll never tell.”

“I’m going to look for it anyway,” Marler said as he sat up and pulled his boots off. He took his socks off and put them in his boots before he set them to the side and reached for my feet. As he pulled my shoes off, he said, “This is always that awkward part, you know?”

“Well, considering I’ve never done anything like this, I don’t know,” I reminded him. I had been excited when Marler assured me we could complete this item with no problems. Now that the time was near, I wasn’t so sure. “Are you sure we should .
